Overview
What is CEA, CARCINO EMBRYONIC ANTIGEN ?
CEA (Carcinoembryonic antigen) is a protein produced by the embryo during its development. It is not normally found in the blood of adults. However, CEA levels are high in many types of cancers of colon, rectum, ovary, breast & pancreas. It is also raised in non-cancer conditions like stomach ulcers, colitis, cirrhosis and benign breast disease. The baseline levels of CEA are higher in smokers. This is a non-specific cancer marker which is used to see effectiveness of treatment.
